How are websites being used?
So before we go into the aspects of web design and development, I thought it would be useful to talk about how websites are being used. Websites are used in lots of ways and for lots of reasons, but here are some of the major uses.
INFORMATION: Seemingly gone are the days when you would look something up in an encyclopedia or dictionary. If there’s something you want to know, Google is generally the first port of call for most users and there’s nearly always a website that has the information you are looking for.
SELLING: Ecommerce websites have dramatically increased in popularity over the last 10 years. Most users now prefer to shop online thanks to cheaper prices, convenience and improved security and trust in payment gateways. Websites are now also becoming the primary selling tool for businesses offering their services.
RELATIONSHIPS: Online dating has been embraced in recent years thanks to users becoming more familiar with profiling websites such as Myspace and Facebook. Social networks have really boomed in 2010, with Facebook alone now being responsible for over 1% of all internet traffic.
FUN: Playing games is still big business on the internet, from Flash games and casino based games to multiplayer community games. Fun also encapsulates the general user surfing the internet, watching videos and generally procrastinating!
