You never get a second chance to make a first impression, everyone has heard this statement before and most stand by it in terms of looking respectable and having the preperation, confidence and knowledge to back up this first crucial meeting ensuring it goes well. This can be applied from situations such as job interview, first date, meeting the parents and yes even your website.
There are millions of websites on the world wide web each of them are showing something off, selling a service or giving their opinion, so what will make your website better than the rest?
You may know that what you have to offer is better than your competitors, you may be cheaper than your competitors or maybe you just want to be noticed. One way to be found is through search engine optimisation (SEO), by getting your website better positions in the SERPs you are throwing your site in front of thousands, even millions of internet users. But if they don’t like what they see, they won’t hang around for long!
If you want to be taken seriously, you dress appropriately, if you are meeting a potential employer you dress as they would expect you to dress, you wouldn’t wear the same outfit to meet your partners parents for the first time, but you still dress how you think they would like you to dress. The same applies to your website design, by defining your target demographic you can display your website in a way that they will respond better to. For example an E commerce website takes into consideration trust badges (such as secure site and VISA, paypal) and opportunities to make a sale easy rather than a businessto business site that needs to be more professional and informative.
Your website design is the first chance online to show your potential customers who you are and what you are about, I doubt you would go to a sales meeting dressed as a hippy or in 80′s gear (unless you are a performing artist or fancy dress salesperson) so why have a website that is not modern or up to date. In recent surveys studies have shown that if a site looks dated in comparison to other sites they feel the site is less professional.
As many of you know its not just looks that make a good impression but having the knowledge or research to back your self up can make or break those initial first meetings, the content on your website should be displayed in an intelligent manner. You would be surprised the amount of websites that are either grammatically incorrect or even just full of sh!t. You can tell a lot about a website and if your users feel you are not being truthful in your content or it does not make sensce full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors they will go elsewhere.
When designing your website think about all of these things, you are not there to sell your self or your business so your site has to do it for you. Make sure your site is a good representaion of your brand and gives the correct impression, bad web design just does not cut it anymore as we do live in a ssuperficial world where people judge a book by its cover, or a website by its design.
